UK IHT at a glance

  • Standard nil-rate band of £325,000 per person
  • Residence nil-rate band of up to £175,000 where applicable
  • Allowances may transfer between spouses or civil partners
  • Above £2m, the residence allowance starts to taper away
  • Tax year shown: 2026/27. Thresholds and rules can change.

Inheritance is rarely about money. It’s about the people you’ve built it for — and the quiet certainty that the choices you make today will reach them, intact, when it matters. Good planning is the difference between a number that arrives by accident and a legacy you intend.

A clearer view of where you stand — and what to do about it.

A short, structured walk-through of the figures that matter, framed by current UK rules. Built for individuals and families thinking about the people they want to provide for.

An indicative gross estate figure, the allowances available to you, and the taxable estate that flows from those numbers — drawn against current UK thresholds.

A headline IHT figure at the standard 40% rate, plus the amount that would reach your beneficiaries — without false precision and without alarmism.

From wills not in place and life cover not in trust, through to estate values above the £2m taper threshold — we surface what’s worth a planner conversation.

A personal A4 PDF you can save, print, share with family, or take into a planner conversation. Includes assumptions, flags, and suggested planning areas.

The big change. From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and death benefits (SIPPs, personal pensions, drawdown funds, unused workplace DC) are, under the Finance Act 2026, due to be added back into your estate and assessed for IHT at 40%. For many people this brings pensions into IHT for the first time. Flip the toggle to compare — the impact summary is shown alongside your snapshot.
